Bill Wiesner knows bears and bear hunting. He has taken 57 black bears by every hunting style and with nearly every hunting arm, but mainly with several styles of bow and arrow. He, his wife and two sons have taken more than 100 bears, 30 of which qualify for the Pope & Young Club record book and seven of which qualify for the Boone & Crockett Club record book.
The book has ten hunting how-to chapters and 10 memoir chapters.
- How-to chapters include black bear natural history; distribution, population & record book entry totals (by state and province); hunting gear (rifle, slug gun, handgun, muzzleloader, bow, crossbow), camo, and other necessary bear hunting items; hunting from ground blinds; hunting styles (D-I-Y, guided, hounds, spot-and-stalk); scouting; baiting and scents; new twists (food plots, calling, decoying); the shot (before, during, after); care of hide for taxidermy; care of meat (processing, freezing, recipes).
- Memoir chapters are entertaining, sometimes humorous, reading. Chapters include incidents, personalities and bears encountered, and family involvement, during the author’s growth as a bear hunter.

A Bear of a Different Color.
It was one of those cold, windy, bleak days that hit us this time of year. I picked that day to read, “The Bear Hunting Obsession of a Driven Man”. It is book, co-authored by Bill Weisener and my good friend, Glenn Helgeland. Both have almost lifetimes of bear hunting experience.
Bill has been hunting and guiding for bear for most of his adult life, in several states and Canada. He is a much sought after seminar speaker at many outdoor shows. Glenn has hunted black bear in various locations for many years. In fact, he was my hunting companion on my first three hunts in Canada and I learned a lot from him. He is an author and editor of some repute and formerly the producer of the most successful outdoor/hunting shows in the Midwest and TN.
